Foster family

Dear friends,

we would like to share with you examples of projects from the Foster Family area that were supported within the grant proceedings. This area includes various kinds of substitute family care. We aim at supporting the existing kinds and services, as well as at developing professional fostering so that children in institutional care find a loving and safe family harbour in as many cases as possible.

Examples of projects:

Amalthea o.s.

Funded project: Education, support and therapy for foster families

Project objectives:

The goal of the project “Education, support, and therapy for foster families” is to increase the quality of foster care and to support the family system by means of educational, therapeutic, and supplementary activities for foster families. These activities are an appropriate complement to the social services that are continuously offered by Amalthea o.s. to foster families. The funds will be used to compensate therapists (family therapists, attachment therapy etc.) and to cover other operating costs directly related to the service.

Člověk hledá člověka, o.s

Funded project: Training methods and training sessions for foster care

Project objectives:

The objective of the project is to transfer the experience and methodology of foreign partners to Czech professionals who work with foster and endangered families and to offer them solid and comprehensive specialized training. These professionals will leverage their knowledge in work with foster and endangered families, which will have a huge impact on the quality of services for these clients. In cooperation with British colleagues (BAAF - www.baaf.org.uk), we will develop a system of 19 educational modules (+ methodological guidelines) derived from the British experience but adapted to the Czech conditions. Each module will be reviewed by an expert panel. The courses will be accredited by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs so that social workers can choose from among them for their lifelong education. Besides, 20 educators should be trained in the UK so that they can pass on their experience to their Czech colleagues.

Project objectives:

The campaign runs once a year and besides raising awareness of the care provided to endangered children in foster families, it also involves educational activities. The association prepares a number of activities for foster and adoptive parents and for professionals, as well as the lay public. The campaign included a spot promoting the idea of foster care. The goal of the spot and of the whole campaign is to target a wide audience and find families interested in accepting an endangered child.

Funded project: Nový domov (New Home)

Project objectives:

The objective of the project is to help the foster family to create a real home with open and kind relations where parents and children like each other and feel safe. To fulfil the goal, the foster family which decides to accept a new child needs information, as well as support. Children going to a new family face problems with adaptation to a new situation and with coexistence with their new parents, siblings and the wider family. The adaptation of the child to the new family is a very demanding situation that influences the child, foster parents, siblings and the wider family. It is a long-term process. It has certain phases, each of which has its problems, depending on the family situation or on the individual nature of the child. If these problems and uncertainties are not addressed in time, they can lead to problems that may result in the break-up of the family or the return of the child to institutional care.
